At First Steps Together, we have high expectations for attendance, because we know that every day in school counts. Research consistently shows a clear link between high attendance and strong academic and personal outcomes. Simply put: when children attend well, they achieve well.
As a specialist provision, we understand that many of our pupils join us with a history of poor attendance, often due to school-based anxiety, unmet needs, or previous negative experiences in education. We do not see this as a barrier, but as an opportunity. Our nurturing environment, specialist staff, and carefully structured routines are designed to rebuild trust in school and support pupils in making a fresh start.
Through individualised support, close communication with families, and a curriculum that engages and motivates, we work hard to transform lives. Many of our pupils show significant improvements in attendance once they are settled and feel safe and understood. These improvements are not just in numbers — they reflect growing confidence, emotional resilience, and a renewed sense of belonging.
We also run regular attendance incentives, including class and individual rewards, to celebrate positive attendance and encourage pupils to value their time in school. These incentives are tailored to our pupils' interests and needs, helping to build motivation and a sense of achievement.
Our approach to attendance is underpinned by a clear and supportive Attendance Policy, which outlines the responsibilities of the school, families, and pupils. This policy sets out how we monitor attendance, intervene early where concerns arise, and work in partnership with parents and carers to overcome barriers to regular attendance. We are committed to helping every child attend, engage, and thrive, and we celebrate the steps — big or small — that lead to improved attendance and lifelong success.
